How to recycle your used Mass Spec, Chromatography System or Laboratory Gas Generator

With all the waste that goes on globally, there’s never a wrong time to talk about recycling, right? But there’s no way you’re going to fit that Mass Spec into your recycling bin.

So, what are the most responsible ways to dispose of your LCMS, GCMS, GC, HPLC systems and Nitrogen Gas Generators?

The answer to this question depends on two main factors:

Factor One: How old is the system you are disposing of?

If the system you are disposing of is over 20 years old, the chances of selling this instrument to another facility are low, meaning that you left with just two options.

The first option for responsibly disposing of the system is to contact a local scrap company who may come and collect the system for free so that you can make use of the space it is taking up in your laboratory. Remember to complete decontamination of the system and provide a certificate to confirm the process. They will recycle the metals in the instrument to prevent them from going into landfills.

The second option is even more environmentally friendly and is to trade the instrument with KRSS for cash, consumables or against another more modern system.

Why would KRSS purchase an old GCMS, LCMS, GC, HPLC or gas Generator?

We have 1000’s of systems on contracts globally; KRSS recycle older instruments. Our skilled engineers take time to strip them into parts and reuse them to keep systems running, especially where the OEM has stopped supporting them. Systems like this may not be worth much, but we can reuse them to Recycle, Reuse and Reduce waste on parts. This doesn’t mean we will take any lab system, but if we can recycle the pieces, we will offer you something and take it away from your facility free of charge.

Selling a Mass Spec, Chromatography System or Gas Generator that is less than 10 years old

If the system you are disposing of is less than ten years old, then there is a better chance that it has some value for use at another facility.

Potential buyers will be interested to know what additions your system has, how old it is when it was last serviced and if it has any problems or warranty cover.

Selling your used GCMS, LCMS, GC, HPLC or gas Generator to another laboratory

If you do manage to find an end-user willing to buy your used system, you will almost certainly get more money than selling to KRSS. You may ask why - well, the answer is simple. The buyer will be taking a gamble on what they are purchasing - a little like buying a used car. You can go on an auction site and buy a car from Bob 100 miles down the road, kick the tyres and maybe even have a test drive, but does the buyer know what he is getting? They also have to arrange to decommission, transportation, installation, ongoing service and a warranty. If you are lucky enough to get someone to pay you what you want - great! If the new buyer has a problem down the line and they come back to you for support, KRSS will be happy to assist them with installation service, parts and installation (at their cost). But this leads us to Factor Two: How much time do you have to sell your used system?

Factor Two: How much time do you have to sell your used system?

Spend time to save money, or spend money to save time. Jim Rohn said, "Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time!"

Selling anything takes time, even for KRSS with our vast database of potential buyers. So here’s the question: do you want to get a little less money for your system but save time on conversations about what it has and what it does, negotiating, giving them access to your facility to remove the instrument and more questions about if and why. Or would you benefit more by selling it for a fair price to KRSS?

Why does KRSS offer less for a used Mass Spec, Chromatography System or Gas Generator?

When we purchase a used GCMS, LCMS, GC, HPLC or Gas Generator, KRSS must factor in many things, including decommissioning, refurbishment by a qualified engineer, replacing faulty or worn parts, marketing the system, sales negotiation, shipping, installation and warranty support.

What if my system is not working or hasn’t been used for a while?

A faulty or unknown system doesn’t mean we cannot recycle it as a KRSS:Renewed system; KRSS need to be aware of this when calculating its actual value. We have a team of manufacturer-trained engineers to fix most things with time and parts, but both cost money. Therefore the offer price may be lower.

How much can you afford to pay?

At KRSS we have exchanged systems for Vials, Caps and Syringe Filters from our sister company Chromatography Direct. We have paid up to £150,000 in cash for a virtually new Mass Spectrometer on the flip side.
